If you have ever moved house or tried to transport a large piece of furniture any significant distance, you’ll know that it is often a great deal cheaper to hire a van or lorry yourself than paying for a removal company. These Do-It-Yourself style hire-vans are fantastic if you’ve got strong friends to help you pack and unpack them. You do, however, need to be aware of some of the ways you can be caught short is using a van-hire service.

Liability: Unless you specifically pay for insurance at the time of hiring the van, you will be liable for any damages incurred when moving items in and out of locations, any damage to the items you transport, and any injuries caused when moving. The hire-van company will not pay for the repair or replacement of items you yourself remove, pack into the van, and unpack. Needless to say, any damage to the van itself will need to be paid for, but some companies may offer cover included in the hire-price for this.

Licence: Depending on your type of driving licence, you may not be able to drive the van yourself. Most hire companies should check this prior to agreeing to hire to you, but you should

be wary just in case. You don’t want to be pulled over and have your licence checked only to find out you’re not legally allowed to drive the vehicle.
